![]() ![]() Rebeck introduces a brilliant feminist intrigue to resolve an illicit love affair with Edmond Rostand (Charles Wu), creator of Cyrano de Bergerac, and examines the actress’s fractious relationship with her son Maurice (William McKenna), whose self-dramatising resentment is another echo of another Hamlet. The playwright, the director and the performer all commit to a vision of Bernhardt freeing herself from the shackles of tradition. Leaving at interval, as a few did, is a terrible mistake. As she sings in the last song of the night: we’re on each other’s team. It’s a wonderful way to send off the summer with a musician who’s a born performer, and a beautifully joyous and communal experience. The fans are varied, from young girls to grey-haired veterans, but all soak it in. This is the first of a two-night stand at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and the night is crystal clear. ![]() It’s especially beautiful when hands are in the air and the crowd are dancing with reckless abandon.
